  • Leave your name, call back number, type of animal and nature of the problem.
  • Confine the animal by leash or by placing it in a carrier or residence. Sick and injured animals may run off before they receive help.
  • If the animal can't be moved cover it with a blanket and stay with it.
  • Be careful not to be bitten, even a docile animal may bite when in pain. If the animal is in the road watch out for vehicles.
  • An injured animal may require emergency surgery - Do Not give the animal food and water.

Cranberry and Pits Reporting Animal Cruelty, Neglect and Abandonment:

Humane officers investigate reports of animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment.
In most cases, educating the owner on proper anmal care and Ohio's animal welfare laws will improve the quality of life for the animal.

In cases where education does not work or the problem is severe and the animal(s) needs immediate intervention humane officers will seize the animal(s), provide veterinary treatment and file animal cruelty charges in one of the three municipal courts in Summit County.

Humane officers enforce the state's animal welfare laws. For officers to investigate animal cruelty and abandonment the animal(s) must be confined to the owner's property - chained, fenced or in the residence. An exception for confinement would be for physical abuse.

For officers to file animal cruelty charges on physical abuse the officers need the help of the reporting party. Successful prosecution requires at least one witness to the abuse or video.

To investigate a report of animal cruelty, neglect or abandonment humane officers need the following information:

  • The name and phone number of the reporting party.
  • The address where the animal(s) is located.
  • What the problem is and when it was noticed.
  • If possible the name of the owner of the animal(s) or of the person committing the act of cruelty.

Humane officers will need to speak with the reporting party. Please do not email reports of animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment.
