Feeding Our Friends, Together

In this season of gratitude, we are thankful for many things and the food on our plates is likely one of them! Sadly, hunger in our community exists, and furry family members are affected too. For our neighbors struggling with food insecurity, concerns over their pets’ needs are at the forefront. Some may go without food so their pets have a meal. Some pets may be given away or surrendered to shelters in times of struggle.

The Humane Society of Summit County works in many ways to create a more compassionate community, both inside our 4 walls and outside of the shelter. One way we practice that mission is by helping loving pet owners in hard times through the Pet Food Pantry Program.

This time last year, we launched a pilot to distribute emergency supplies of pet food to food pantries around the county. Over 25,000lbs of food was given away in less than 2 weeks – and we realized how great the need really was. Our partner food pantries let us know how deeply appreciated the supplies were, so we launched the Pet Food Pantry Program this year and now HSSC staff and volunteers distribute 4,000lbs of food supplies on a monthly basis to 9 food pantries around Summit County.

Our dispersed food is purchased at bulk rates through generous grant funding and monetary donations made specifically to our Pet Pantry Program! Additionally, supplies are donated from pet food retailers and manufacturers and community members. HSSC accepts dry dog and cat food of any brand and any size bag, including open and damaged packages, for distribution.

Through the Pet Food Pantry Program, we hope to provide a source of nourishment to all members of the family, human and animal alike, so that no one goes hungry to keep their pet fed. This program helps to ensure all members of families, 2- and 4-legged, have the food resources they need. More than anything, we hope to keep families together.
