Easter Tidings

While the Easter Bunny may love the upcoming holiday weekend, real animals have more to worry about this Easter! Lilies are beautiful flowers associated with this time of year, with many different varieties like the Easter Lilly, Day lily, Tiger Lily, and Calla Lily. While they are pretty to look at, they are actually a danger to household cats! Cats can die of kidney failure if they eat any part of these toxic flowers. As little as two leaves can make your cat sick, and if left untreated can become fatal in just three days! If your cat ingests any part of a Lilly, be sure to contact your veterinarian or an emergency vet immediately.

Easter is also a great time of year to appreciate spring and the baby animals that come along with the season. Owning rabbits, baby chicks, and ducklings is a long term commitment and babies grow to become large full adults. These animals should not be given as Easter gifts unless you are ready to make the life-time commitment to owning the animal! Rabbits can live between 8 to 10 years and require ample amounts of care. Unfortunately, 80 percent of shelter rabbits are abandoned Easter gifts. So while it may be tempting to buy a live ‘Easter bunny’, stick with the stuffed animal and chocolate bunny option for this holiday unless you are ready for the long term commitment and responsibility.

Spread the word this Easter about the danger of lilies, as well as the realities of animals as Easter gifts. When it comes to rabbits and other animals, adopt- don’t shop! If you are considering making that life-time commitment to an animal, stop by our shelter for more information and to meet some of our adorable critters! Check our website for pictures of our available animals, and have a fantastic holiday weekend!
