Spay and Neuter Education

Spay. Neuter. Adopt. Love

1. What is spay and neutering?

  • Spaying-removing the ovaries and uterus of a female pet-is a veterinary procedure that requires minimal hospitalization and offers lifelong health benefits.
  • Neutering-removing the testicles of your male dog or cat-will vastly improve your pet's behavior and keep him close to home.

2. How does the animal benefit from spay/neutering?

  • Helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. Altering your canine friend will increase his/her life an average of 1 to 3 years, felines, 3 to 5 years.
  • Spaying and neutering reduces the risk of certain types of cancers and infections, especially if it is performed prior to the first heat in females and before puberty in males.
  • Sterilizing your cat/dog makes him/her a better pet, reducing his/her urge to roam and decreasing the risk of contracting diseases or getting hurt as they roam.

o Surveys indicate that as many as 85% of dogs hit by cars are unaltered. Intact male cats living outside have been shown to live on average less than two years.

o Feline Immunodeficiency Syndrome is spread by bites and intact cats fight a great deal more than altered cats.

3.How does the community benefit from spay/neutering?

  • It helps to reduce companion animal overpopulation. Most countries have a surplus of companion animals and are forced to euthanize or disregard their great suffering. The surplus is in the millions in the United States. They need our help to reduce their numbers until there are good homes for them all.
  • Stray animals can easily become a public nuisance, soiling parks and streets, ruining shrubbery, frightening children and elderly people, creating noise and other disturbances, causing automobile accidents, and sometimes even killing livestock or other pets.

Here at Pawsibilities Humane Society of Greater Akron, we spay and neuter all of our dogs, cats, and rabbits before adoption. Although we do not provide vet services to the public, Summit County has multiple low cost options for spay/neuter services! Contact them for pricing information and to make an appointment!
