January 4 - A New Year's Resolution

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, in 2017, the latest year for which data is available, an estimated 60% of cats and 56% of dogs in the United States were overweight or obese. According to Dr. Ernie Ward, the founder of the Association, "Obesity is the number one health threat pets face." Adds Dr. Christopher Byers, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, "This increasingly common condition decreases a dog's life span, increases its risk for various cancers, and causes orthopedic problems-just to name a few of the possible [consequences]."

Dogs and cats waiting in shelters for their forever homes are especially prone to weight gain, no matter how lovingly and conscientiously they're cared for. And, as we know all too well, so are adults who pilot computer screens and desks during the work week. That's why the Humane Society of Summit County is partnering with Ted Moore, one of its longtime volunteers, and Blue, who have decided to team up to meet these challenges, to raise awareness of this problem in a fun and positive way.

Starting at the end of January, Ted and Blue will check in with us every month during their journey from where they are to where they want to be. (If Blue finds his forever home before reporting time, which we certainly hope he will, we'll keep you posted on the progress of another weight-challenged canine.) They'll be telling us about changes in their diet, exercise, and other aspects of their lifestyles and how those are helping them achieve their goals. We'll get started by posting Ted's first blog entry, some photos, and comments from Blue, on January 31.

A change this big will be hard for these guys, both of whom are pretty set in their ways. If Blue and Ted know that their progress is paying off for their shelter pals, they'll be able to keep going through the tough days. A little community support goes a long way, and that’s where you come in. Consider making a gift to the Humane Society of Summit County in support of Ted & Blue’s journey today, and help them reach their $5,000 goal to support the health and wellness of the 2,600 pets to be rescued by the shelter this year.
