July 10 - Back on the Trail

About a month ago, life at the Humane Society of Summit County was temporarily interrupted by an outbreak of canine infectious tracheobronchitis, commonly known as kennel cough. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Melisa Kauffmann, the shelter's veterinarian, the employees followed rigorous feeding, sanitation, quarantine, and other infection control protocols. This, combined with the staff's unlimited patience and dedication, kept the situation under control.

Earlier today, the first step in returning to normal was announced. As of tomorrow, Blue and his friends will be able to leave the shelter for their beloved field trips.

I'll be out of town this weekend, but Blue will be in good hands with the expert handlers of the Sunday morning field trip crew. He and I will return to the woods on Sunday, July 20th. We'll head north on the Buckeye Trail from Lock 29. We hope to be able to kick out 10 miles. If we can pull that off, it will be our first double-digit outing. Wish us luck!

------------------------------------

January: 104.5 lb
Late April: 97.6 lb
Early June: 91.4 lb
Early July: 87.0 lb
Total weight lost: 17.5 lb.
Percentage of body weight lost: 16.7%
Goal weight: 85 lb
Pounds to go: 2 lb

Blue was finally able to step on the scale earlier this morning. The result: 87 pounds, or 2 pounds away from his initial goal! In the coming week, Dr. Kauffman will be evaluating Blue's weight loss progress to see where we should go from here, especially considering his recent illness.

------------------------------------

So now you know that Blue is almost where he needs to be weight-wise. You also know he's tough, smart, great fun to be around, and that nothing much gets him down. As much as I've come to love this dog, and as much as I enjoy our time together on the trails, I'm getting pretty anxious to hand the leash off to you or someone you know. There's a whole world out there that Blue now knows a lot about. He'd love to introduce you to it.

And if that's not in the cards, let's not forget that this is still a fundraiser. Especially after the last few weeks, the shelter needs all the resources it can get. Please click here if you can help. No amount is too small to make a difference.

Check back here in two weeks or so for a midsummer update on Blue's progress and our future hiking plans. Because getting to his 85-pound goal weight is just the beginning for this fellow.

Thanks for your support, and see you on the trails!
