How. About. That?

For the first time since this project began 10 months ago, Blue is now single digits away from his ultimate goal weight. After last month's setback, that's a big deal, as I think you would agree.

Again, because it just can't be said often enough, thanks to the staff and volunteers of HSSC for teaming up to give this special dog a healthier and happier life.

As I mentioned in my last post here, once a year I take a week off to go hiking somewhere other than Ohio. This year, my travels took me to northern Vermont, where I managed to aggravate an old knee injury climbing down a steep and slippery section of trail with a fully-loaded backpack. According to my doc, it looks like it'll be awhile before Blue and I can hit the trails again together.

Which is beginning to look like an opportunity for my friend and some of the other members of the HSSC Group Walks Team.

Allow me to me explain.

It'll be a few weeks, at least, before I can have a lively (“Oh. Look! Water! Let’s swim!!”) 80-pound companion on the other end of the leash. So Blue’s going to be counting on his Group Walk Team friends to keep heading south on the Buckeye Trail. I'll be coming along as a sort of helper, while one of my fellow volunteers walks Blue. That’s the plan, anyway.

Blue’s journey on the Buckeye Trail is headed out of the woods of Cuyahoga Valley National Park and into Akron’s suburbs and then the city itself. Blue and his band of traveling humans will be on the Towpath, busy sidewalks, and even streets. This is great for socializing, teaching polite greeting behavior and how to ignore distractions, and other skills that will be needed for Blue to earn his Canine Good Citizenship certification. (Oops. That slipped out. Oh well, more about that in a few weeks.)

It's better for Blue to have 2 friends along instead of just me at a time like this. The idea is to have a less banged up handler holding the leash and me coming along for the exercise and to do a little PR as we stroll along. Besides, the more people Blue gets to know, the more likely it is he'll find his forever home just that much quicker.

Blue will be staying close to home this Sunday and walking trails near the shelter with his Group Walk Team buddies while I recover from my little stumble in the mountains. But fear not. I’ll be back on Facebook a week from Monday with an update on Blue’s return to the Buckeye Trail with some brand new humans on the other end of his hiking harness.

As always, and especially as we speed toward the end of our fundraising year, please consider helping Blue and his friends stay healthy and active as they continue their searches for their forever homes. Click here and give what you can. Every dollar - every single one - really, really matters.

Also, as fun as this project has been for Blue and I, let's never forget that its real goal is not losing weight or raising money, important as those are. It's finding this remarkable fellow the comfy dog bed and active family he deserves so much. So please, if you're on Facebook, Like, Comment, and Share the post that links to this blog entry. Because you just never know.

Until then, happy trails, and have a great week!
